The project will use a non-traditional approach to in-service teacher training. Traditional in-service teacher training has a tendency to impose short term, “hit-and-run” workshops that teachers find hard to implement in real school and classroom context and as a result, rarely bring a real change. This project will use a long term model and move away from a traditional in-service teacher training model viewing teachers as deficit and needing to be filled in with up-to-date knowledge and skills by researchers.
ACT-ESL training views teachers as a resource and their current teaching practices as a point of departure for advancement, enhancement and changes. Our goal is to provide a path to success for the content-area teachers who work with English Language Learners (ELLs) as well as a path to academic success of ELLs.
