Assisting, Collaborating, and Training ESL Secondary Content Teachers

Welcome to ACT-ESL

The number of LEP (Limited English Proficiency) students in Virginia has increased greatly in recent years. Chesterfield County Public Schools, the fourth largest school system in the state, has had an increase in the documented number of LEP students by the Virginia Department of Education of more than 6 times in the past ten years.

The goal of The ACT-ESL (Assisting, Collaborating, Teaching ESLACT-ESL Logo Secondary Content-area Teachers) Project at VCU is to provide a path to success for the content-area teachers who work with English Language Learners (ELLs) as well as a path to academic success of ELLs.

The ACT-ESL Project, funded by U.S. Department of Education, was first developed in 2007 and will continue through 2012. ACT-ESL provides ESL instructional training programs to secondary (grades 6-12) teachers of math, science, social studies, and English/language arts.

ACT-ESL training provides high-quality, focused, and sustained professional development opportunities. Accordingly, ACT-ESL will provide services and activities largely in three areas:

  1. Summer Institute
  2. Follow-ups with technical assistance
  3. Building of professional learning communities

The partner local educational agency of this project is Chesterfield County Public Schools.

Please visit the eligibility page for further information on the project and information on participation eligibility for the training and incentives.
